Roel Uleners

Roel Uleners, Vice President of Strategic Design

Roel Uleners is Vice President of Strategic Design. He is a widely recognized expert on the use of design language to convey complex concepts through lucid communications tools. He works closely with our clients to architect visual solutions to complex problems, design their strategic positioning, and help them with strategic communications to their target audiences.

Prior to Chehade & Company, he was the Creative Director of XPLANE, a leading strategic design consultancy that helps leaders of global organizations tackle complex organizational challenges and co-create solutions through design. He led the design practice, as well as a team of strategic designers in the U.S. and Europe. Roel's clients included leaders at Disney, American Express, Samsung, Oracle, BP, Coca-Cola, ICANN, and the Marine Corps Logistics Command.

Before XPLANE, Roel held senior positions at various design, brand, advertising and experiential marketing studios and agencies - and ran his own studio - both in the EU and the US.

Originally from Belgium, Roel holds an MFA in visual communication from St. Lucas School of Art in Antwerp (BE), where he later held the position of Assistant Professor at the MBA/Advertising Design Program. He also taught as an Assistant Professor at the MFA in Collaborative Design at Pacific Northwest College of Art (Portland, Oregon).

Roel is a member of the Board of Regents of the Da Vinci Schools in Los Angeles, dedicated to real-world, project-based learning, educating students from the most-challenged areas in Los Angeles and graduating them to attend leading colleges and universities. He is also a pro bono strategic advisor to the non-profit SchoolsThatCan (in New York), helping close the opportunity and skill gaps in urban education.

He has been in the U.S. since 2001, and currently enjoys living with his wife and three sons in the Columbia River Gorge, east of Portland, Oregon.
